I visited your hospital for a sonogram and not only was she friendly, patient and informative, but she also genuinely made me feel right at home and comfortable. My job was recently dissolved, and I have been contemplating entering into the medical field as a radiology technician. I was so motivated by her insight that now I will move forward to pursue it as my next career choice. It is a rarity today to find "good service," so I commend Lynn for her efforts in standing out! You are very fortunate to have her on your staff. With team players like her, there will only be continued success, and I will highly recommend friends and family to CentraState. Sincerely, Tanisha Stovall Westampton By John T. Gribbin, FACHE President & CEO Thanks to ongoing advancements in treatment and earlier detections, the life expectancy of cancer survivors has been steadily increasing over the past several years. CentraState's comprehensive cancer services consist of an outstanding team of highly skilled physicians, nurses and specialists who, through a multidisciplinary approach, aim to prevent recurrence and minimize long-term side effects of treatment. Our host of state-of-the-art cancer- fighting diagnostic tools and treatments allows us to provide the best cancer care available—all close to home. But extending longevity is just one aspect of treating the disease. A variety of physical, emotional and other challenges accompanies a cancer diagnosis. Our goal is to not only increase survivorship but also optimize quality of life. We pay special attention to the needs of patients and their families through an ever-widening range of initiatives including support groups, a palliative care program, and all of the leading-edge cancer services provided at the Statesir Cancer Center. We now also have a duo of outstanding cancer navigators: Sharon Lorfing, who has been with us nearly four years, and our newest navigator, Melissa Olsen, who has been a facilitator of our breast cancer support groups for the past three years. This issue of Healthy Directions contains three cancer features that address multiple types of cancer. First is an informative infographic on page 4 about some interesting facts and statistics on skin cancer. On page 5, you'll meet one of the newest members of CentraState's physician staff, Cristina Ignacio, MD, who presents a quiz to help you determine your cancer risk. Also, on page 6, you'll read the story of Jim Tedesco, who has survived cancer twice: thyroid cancer when he was 12, then colon cancer 50 years later. It's an inspiring story about never giving up the fight against cancer. And remember, the most effective way to fight cancer is halting its spread through early detection. Please encourage anyone you know who may be at risk to get screened for cancer. It may just save a life. Melissa Olsen Lynn Corvasce
