From the President Dear Friend of All Children's Hospital, I invite you, as one of our most dedicated supporters, to follow All Children's Hospital on our transformational journey. Already known and loved in our own community for excellence in care, we are working hard to become a nationally known pediatric teaching and research facility. We are well on our way with leadership recruitment in progress for our core programs; a hospital-wide strategic plan for the future; a successful second-year recruitment of our residency program along with several accredited fellowships; expanded access for our Johns Hopkins Medicine Institutional Review Board, which allows us to greatly increase our research capabilities; and a strong patient safety and quality program – which you will read more about on page 16. We are lucky enough to have the incredible support of our community boards and you, our amazing donors, who recognize the enormity of the task at hand and stand with us as partners in seeing it through. I am extremely pleased to announce after a comprehensive search, the hiring of George Jallo, M.D., as the new chair for our Institute for Brain Protection Sciences. Dr. Jallo, who joins All Children's from Johns Hopkins Hospital, is board certified in neurosurgery. He is particularly expert in treating intradural spinal tumors, brain stem and eloquent brain tumors in both children and adults. His leadership will help direct the future of our developing neurosciences program, and you should expect to see significant growth in neurological care, research, teaching and more. For a small sample of what is to come by way of our new Mind Body program, see page 4. I am so pleased to welcome Dr. Jallo, who will join All Children's this fall. Because research is one of our big initiatives, we have devoted several articles to the subject in this issue of For the Kids, including, I'm proud to say, coverage of a $717,000 grant that was recently awarded to ACH JHM from the National Institutes of Health for cancer research. This grant is a significant achievement for the hospital, and I encourage you to read about it on page 18. Should our growing research programs (or anything else you read about here) inspire you to get involved or make a gift to All Children's, please use the attached envelope or contact the Foundation at 727-767-4199. For all of our accomplishments, there is much left to do, and for your unwavering support, we thank you. Sincerely, Jonathan M. Ellen, M.D. President and Physician in Chief All Children's Hospital Johns Hopkins Medicine Vice Dean and Professor of Pediatrics Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine Summer 2015 3
