GM | 2 Part of the Neurology family of publications, Neurology: Genetics is an open-access journal that launched in April 2015 and publishes six times a year. When the editors of Neurology approached Dr. Pulst about becoming editor of a new neurogenetics publication, he immediately recognized the need for such a journal. "Genetics has transformed virtually every part of medicine, and the number of manuscripts published each year that include neurology and genetics in their abstracts has greatly increased," Dr. Pulst says. "I saw this new journal as an opportunity to marry two things that are dear to me—neurology and genetics—in the editorial space." As editor of Neurology: Genetics, Dr. Pulst leads a team of five associate editors and makes the final determination as to whether manuscripts should be published in the journal after they have been peer reviewed. "We cast a relatively wide net in terms of the genomic changes that we consider in the journal, ranging from disease-causing mutations to risk alleles," Dr. Pulst says. "We aim to publish the highest-quality manuscripts in the field of neurogenetics, and submitting authors can be assured their work will receive expert review." The Clinical Neurosciences Center at University of Utah Health Care is working to help stroke survivors and their loved ones reach new levels on their paths to recovery with a unique Stroke Support Network. "One of our major objectives has been to engage the younger stroke survivors," explains Jill Austin, RN, BSN, Stroke Program Manager, University of Utah Health Care. "The social and economic impact on younger stroke survivors can be dramatic and life changing—from a shift in career to changing roles in raising a family. We wanted to create a supportive outlet for these survivors and their families." Participants in the support group enjoy monthly activities, such as stroke-specific yoga classes and health-related lectures. An online community network also allows constant and easy communication between members, something Austin says is crucial for helping survivors overcome social and physical limitations during their recovery period. "The network's structure allows participants to be involved through a variety of venues and is designed to engage the survivors in ways that will personally benefit them," Austin says. "Especially for younger survivors, knowing they're not alone means a lot."
