Greater Boston 05-816 from the Publisher W ELCOME, PHYSICIANS AND health- care leaders, to the latest issue of MD News Greater Boston. One of the most dynamic stories in health care over the past few years has been the growth of Lahey Health. With mergers and affiliations that have aligned the Burlington-based hospital with Northeast Health System and Winchester Hospital, among others, in recent years, Lahey has become a major player in the healthcare market at a time when being competitive has become increasingly important. Our cover story focuses on the Lahey Hospital & Medical Center Department of Transplantation, which pioneered liver transplantation in the region 30 years ago and remains at the forefront of the field today under the leadership of Elizabeth Pomfret, MD. The innovative integrated care model reduces wait times for patients, improves communication and collaboration between caregivers and fosters lifelong partnerships between patients and their healthcare providers. Our special feature this month focuses on the Center for Breast Care at St. Elizabeth's Medical Center. Breast cancer is one of the most anxiety-inducing diagnoses a woman can receive. In interviews with Jan Rothschild, MD, and Kevin O'Donnell, MD, we learn that, from the first 48 hours after referral to long after a patient's treatment is completed, the multidisciplinary team at St. Elizabeth's is focused on easing that anxiety and guiding the patient toward an optimal outcome. Some of the most encouraging medical advances in recent months have been in the field of women's health, and we delve into the findings in our special clinical section. We look at breast cancer survivorship, which is on a significant upward trajectory, thanks to a drug combination that has changed the standard of care. In addition, we examine a study suggesting that women who request but do not receive a Caesarean section may face greater risk of post-traumatic stress symptoms. We round up a variety of statistics about women and their health. Finally, we have news about a popular special edition that is coming this fall. It's been a couple of years since we published our last CEO Edition, a time in which much has changed in the healthcare community. The MD News CEO Edition gives your top executives a chance to address those changes and help define your organization's role in this ever-evolving market. If you would like your CEO to be featured, feel free to contact me at 508-888-1502 or mjones@mdnews.com.
