AT ANY ACTIVITY LEVEL, sports can relieve stress, provide enjoyable exercise and help you bond with
friends. However, pain in the knees can take away the joy of sports.
"Many athletes with knee pain feel like they're never going to return to their sport," said Jestyn Cummings,
ARNP/FNP, MSN, nurse practitioner in orthopedics at the Franciscan Sports, Orthopedics & Spine Health Center
at CHI Franciscan Health. "However, if they seek medical care from a capable provider, they can discover the
root of the problem and begin a treatment plan that gets them back on the fi eld."
CHI Franciscan offers many options for treating knee pain—no matter the cause.
WHY IT HURTS
Learning the cause of your pain is the fi rst step toward feeling better. Knee injuries may result from easily
recalled experiences or appear as chronic pain that has gotten worse over time.
"Traumatic knee injuries are often related to tears in the knee ligaments," Cummings said. "Repetitive stress injuries can also
create issues such as tendonitis for athletes practicing high-impact sports."
But not all joint issues result from participation in sports.
"As athletes age, they may develop a degenerative knee problem such as arthritis," Cummings said. "Patients may also have a
congenital abnormality or genetic problem that increases their risk for knee pain."
