Asthma is a respiratory condition that causes the airways to the lungs to narrow and become inflamed. When an asthma attack occurs, it can result in episodes of tightness in the chest, breathing difficulties, wheezing and coughing. Both children and adults can be affected by asthma. The American Academy of Allergy, DALLA S TX Asthma & Immunology estimates that about half of those with asthma suffer from allergic asthma — a form of the condition that is triggered by an allergen such as pollen. When people with allergic asthma are exposed to an allergen, particularly during the spring months when seasonal allergies are at their peak, it can make their typical asthma symptoms even worse. Gaining Control While both allergies and asthma may be controlled with medications, it's important that people with allergic asthma determine the allergen that triggers their symptoms. During a visit with an allergist, a patient can undergo tests to determine which substances he or she is allergic to — pollen, pet dander or mold, for example — so the asthma sufferer can take steps to avoid the trigger. If avoidance doesn't work, the allergist might recommend medications to help build resistance to the allergen.
