Photo of the original hospital circa 1978 "The hospital is such an asset to our community – I would do anything to try to make it successful so that it's here forever," says Nordby, a businessman who, at age 84, is only now beginning to consider retirement. "Having a local hospital is a wonderful thing to save lives and make life easier for people." Nordby served as Huron Regional Medical Center's first president, established the first board of directors and worked tirelessly to ensure HRMC stayed a vibrant part of the community. He remains a passionate supporter and has been involved in projects ranging from Huron's Splash Central to the new 4-H building on the SD State Fairgrounds. "Earl Nordby helped make HRMC what it is today," says Paul Rann, executive director of the HRMC Foundation. "He would be the first to give credit to others, and it's true that he did not do it alone. In the early days, he accepted the reins of leadership and convinced a lot of good people to join him." To see all the ways you can support HRMC, visit www.hrmcfoundation.org and select "Giving Opportunities." The hospital began in 1947 as a ministry of the St. John Franciscan Sisters. In 1978, Earl Nordby led the effort to purchase the hospital and establish it as a community-based institution. w w w. h u r o n r e g i o n a l . o r g welloneconnection 7
