+++++++++++++++++++++++++++ + + +++++++++++++++++++++++++++ FROM THE PUBLISHER +++ +++ H St. Catherine of Siena Medical Center in Smithtown has provided state-of-the-art care for conditions of the colon, rectum and anus since 2008. Renowned for their advanced skills in minimally invasive surgery, David E. Rivadeneira, M.D., and Jill C. Genua, M.D., provide the latest diagnostic and therapeutic services. Screening methods for colon cancer can detect the disease at its earliest, most curable stages; however, unfortunately, only about 40% of Americans age 50 and older get tested. In response, the Colon and Rectal Program has expanded to a second office located at St. Charles Hospital in Port Jefferson, providing Long Islanders even greater access to a full range of services and adding convenience for patients who are hesitant to undergo potentially lifesaving screenings. H Also in this issue, we examine the pros and cons of patients using the Internet to self-diagnose. Recent reports indicate that eight out of 10 people surf the Web for insight into their health, and seeking health information on the Internet only stands to increase. While some patients will believe inaccurate information they find online — which could cause them to doubt or disregard their physicians' advice — many patients are simply attempting to empower themselves to become active participants in their health care. Just as self-diagnosis can be detrimental to the physician/patient relationship, so too can outright dismissal of an empowered patient by a physician. Read on to learn how to avoid difficult situations with patients and ensure the Internet is an asset, not a liability, for both patient and physician. As you flip through the pages of this publication, you'll also find pertinent information about medical research and trending topics, in addition to news from the local health care community. My goal is to spark an open dialogue among health care providers through the pages of MD News Long Island. Feel free to further the conversation by contacting me.
