UP Health System – Marquette is enhancing the medical community and economic development in the region with its plans to construct a new, $300 million+ hospital campus. SITE AND FACILITY designs are nearing completion, with groundbreaking slated for spring 2016 and occupancy for late 2018. e new hospital campus will include a state-of-the-art, 265-bed hospital and 80,000-square-foot medical office building, and will be located in the heart of Marquette on a 37-acre site known as the "Roundhouse Property." e Roundhouse site was used for industrial purposes for generations, and reclaiming this "brownfield" to make it a health destination will drastically improve the quality of life for area residents. "Environmentally, this is another step forward for the city of Marquette, which has an amazing track record of successfully addressing brownfield areas previously used for industrial purposes," says UPHS Market President Jim Bogan. "e city of Marquette has demonstrated repeatedly that brownfield areas can be transformed to revitalize our community." Duke LifePoint Healthcare, which owns and operates UP Health System – Marquette, is investing more than $300 million in funding for the project. UP Health System – Marquette will occupy its current facilities at the College Avenue location until the new hospital is constructed and operational. Hospital leaders will continue to work closely with city officials and the community to explore future uses of its current campus property. Construction of the new UP Health System – Marquette campus is one of the biggest single medical and economic development stories for the city of Marquette in the past 100 years. is spring, UPHS – Marquette announced that Skanska Closner has been selected as the general contractor for the construction of the new hospital campus. Skanska Closner is a joint venture partnership of Skanska USA and Closner Construction, which both have strong ties to the Marquette community. Skanska USA is one of the largest construction and development companies and one of the top healthcare builders in the nation. e company has constructed two hospital facilities in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan: Mackinac Straits Health System in St. Ignace and Baraga County Memorial Hospital in L'Anse. Closner Construction is a local contractor based in Marquette.
