"It's a good mix of creative oppor- tunities and practical skills," Keith said. "It's the first workshop of its kind [in this area]." SUPPORT GROUPS, TOO Keith was also the catalyst for the transgender support groups for par- ents and teens held twice a month at Temple Israel in West Bloomfield. The parent group, co-facilitated by Keith and Dr. Melissa Farrell, a Jewish Family Service staff psycholo- gist, began meeting in May to dis- cuss topics that include school and medical issues. Attendance ranges from about 10 to 20 adults includ- ing parents, grandparents and other family members. "We've had whole families come, including aunts and uncles," Keith said. A support group for transgen- der teens began in September, led by Kari Provizer, director of the Robert Sosnick Family Life Center at Temple Israel, and Dr. Toni Caretto, a clinical psychologist specializing in transgender issues. "It's a blast," said Hunter, "a great way to meet other people like you. Usually our parents have to come get us [after the scheduled ending time] because we're just hanging out with each other." Hunter, who has provided support to many transgender teens since he began his transition two years ago, finds connecting with others in com- parable circumstances has given him new confidence. "You always have something to talk about," Hunter said. "You have different experiences, yet they're similar; especially if you're not good at small talk, it's nice to be with people where you can cut right to the chase." * Hunter and Roz Keith planned a transgender workshop together. Workshop registration starts at 9:15 a.m. Sunday, Oct. 18, at Affirmations, 290 W. Nine Mile, Ferndale. Free. Lunch is included.
