It has been many years since we featured then-CEO Gary Gibbons, M.D., on the cover. The hospital's recent acquisition by Steward Health Care opens a new era, and our cover story highlights the introduction of MAKOplasty — a new technology that is improving surgical precision and patient outcomes for total and partial joint replacements. We interviewed orthopedic surgeon Leonid Dabuzhsky, M.D., who is using MAKOplasty and its RIO Robotic Arm Interactive Orthopedic System to provide unprecedented accuracy to orthopedic surgeons as they perform partial knee and total hip replacement procedures. Cancer care at Jordan Hospital is a service line we've been covering for a long time. There have been a number of exciting developments over the years, and this month's feature story about the Breast Cancer Risk Assessment program covers the most recent of them. The idea is to assess women's levels of risk for developing breast cancer and target appropriate levels and types of screening accordingly. The project is a joint venture between the Breast Center and the radiology department at Jordan Hospital, along with Alliance Imaging, and neatly accomplishes the dual goals of early detection and efficient use of health care resources. Cancer care is also the subject of our Physician Profiles, for which we spoke to the four new oncology physicians who have joined the staff of Southcoast Centers for Cancer Care. Our interviews with Beth Herrick, M.D.; Susan J. Kim, M.D.; A. Jason Zauls, M.D.; and Sonia Seng, M.D., offer insight into what attracted each of them to Southcoast and what they feel they bring to the field of cancer care in southeastern Massachusetts.
