Once again, we examine the world-class health care available right here in Central New York. Our cover story features the neurology services available at Upstate Medical University. Upstate's mission to unravel the complexities of the brain through innovative treatments and techniques is a commitment shared by its specialists and staff, whose expertise facilitates local access to the full complement of neurological services. Upstate has gathered the personnel and resources to provide the region with the highest level of patient care, research, education and service. In 2015, Upstate Medical University was one of six hospitals in New York State to earn DNV Healthcare designation as a Comprehensive Stroke Center. Our feature story explores the minimally invasive spinal surgery program at St. Joseph's Hospital Health Center. Minimally invasive spine surgery techniques use special instruments designed to perform acute surgeries. Physicians review MRIs to assess whether the patient will be better served with minimally invasive techniques or traditional open surgery. The new approach requires smaller incisions and results in less scar tissue, while facilitating faster recovery times and shorter hospital stays. Once again, I would like to thank all those who come together to create our magazine. Here at MD News, we are dedicated to delivering an engaging reader experience — one with real local relevance. In each issue, we highlight distinguished and accomplished physicians and practice groups. We also provide updates on the latest medical studies, pointers for managing your practice and a unique look at what is happening in the local medical community. We love to receive nominations for our cover stories, current news within your organization and feedback on articles. I would also like to suggest that you visit mdnews.com to discover a wonderful resource for healthcare marketing. We are here to serve the physician and healthcare community.
