HIGHER UTILIZATION The number of bariatric surgeries performed in the United States rose from 158,000 in 2011 to 179,000 in 2013, according to the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery. BARIATRIC SURGERY CONTINUES TO PROLIFERATE — AND THAT HAS SIGNIFICANT IMPLICATIONS FOR SURGEONS WHO PERFORM THE PROCEDURES, FOR PHYSICIANS WHO TREAT OBESITY-RELATED COMORBIDITIES AND FOR PLASTIC SURGEONS. Step Two Rising percentages of bariatric patients underwent various types of plastic surgery in 2014, the American Society of Plastic Surgeons reports. + Tummy tucks rose 4%. + Thigh lifts and upper-arm lifts increased 9%. + Breast lifts increased 10%. 2011 2013 ■ 36.7% of bariatric surgery patients had Roux-en-Y gastric bypass ■ 34.2% underwent Roux-en-Y gastric bypass ■ 35.4% had adjustable gastric band ■ 17.8% had sleeve gastrectomy ■ 14% had adjustable gastric band ■ 6% had revision surgery ■ 6% had revision surgery ■ 0.9% underwent biliary pancreatic diversion with duodenal switch (BPD/DS) ■ 1% had BPD/DS ■ 3.2% had "other" surgery ■ 2.7% had "other" surgery Source: American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery SHIFTING SURGICAL SANDS ACROSS THE AGES The obesity rate for Americans 65 or older rose from 26.3% in 2013 to 27.9% in 2014, according to the Gallup-Healthways Well-Being Index. The obesity rate for adults overall was 27.7%, up from 27.1%. Obesity and overweight have a global impact. The World Health Organization notes that: + The rate of obesity in 2014 was more than twice what it was 35 years ago. + In 2014, almost 2 billion adults were overweight. Approximately 600 million of those were obese. + O b e s i t y a n d o v e r w e i g h t affect more than 40 million children worldwide. + In 2014, 15% of women and 11% of men were obese.
