The American Stroke Association recommends thinking FAST for recognizing stroke: F – Is one side of the face drooping? A – Is one arm weak or numb? S – Is speech slurred or difficult to understand? T – Timely care matters. If you think someone is having a stroke, call 911. EXPANDING Care for Stroke Neuroscience Medical Director Appointed Andro Zangaladze, M.D., Ph.D., a board-certified neurologist with fellowship training in neurophysiology, has been appointed medical director of Neuroscience Services for Inspira Health Network. Dr. Zangaladze completed his fellowship at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital and previously served as director of Neuroscience for Virtua. He will begin seeing patients in January. In addition to providing general neurology services, Dr. Zangaladze will also direct a subspecialty clinic for the treatment of epilepsy. Dr. Zangaladze will lead physician recruitment efforts to expand Inspira's neurology and neurosurgical services. "Hold both arms out in front of you like this." The Inspira emergency medicine physician demonstrates beside the patient bed. On the monitor, the Jefferson stroke specialist watches her arm drift down. Rapid, expert analysis is needed to determine if clot-busting medication will help during a stroke. The team at Inspira Health Network, in collaboration with Jefferson, is always accessible to provide that answer. Getting the care you need for your brain can make all the difference for the rest of your life. The new partnership between Jefferson Health and Inspira Health Network expands your options through telemedicine, a technology that enables a remote physician specialist to fully participate in a patient evaluation in real time. Long Distance, Quick Evaluation Patients at all Inspira Health Network hospitals can be evaluated quickly for stroke through Jefferson Expert Teleconsulting (JET). First available at Inspira Medical Center Woodbury, JET is now being used systemwide at Inspira Health Network. JET allows the physician and patient to speak directly with a Jefferson neuroscience specialist about symptoms and medical history. A joint decision is made either to continue treatment at the current facility or to transfer to a location offering more advanced treatment. "Strokes can be devastating and can cause significant disabilities and life-altering negative consequences," said James M. Bonner, D.O., medical director of the Department of Emergency Medicine and president of the medical staff at Inspira Medical Center Woodbury. "With this technology and relationship in place, our patients don't have to leave their home communities to get access to downtown-level expertise in the diagnosis and treatment of stroke." Outpatient, Specialized Care for Parkinson's Disease and Other Movement Disorders Another benefit of the Jefferson partnership is the addition of outpatient specialty clinics. The first such clinic is the Movement Disorder Clinic in Mullica Hill. "The Movement Disorder Clinic is focused on treating conditions such as seizure disorders and Parkinson's disease," Dr. Bonner said. "Prior to the clinic's opening, this subspecialty care would not be available in our neighborhood."
