Long Island 05-848 from the Publisher G R E E TI N G S , A N D W E LCO M E to the latest issue of MD News Long Island. In the recent past, people with chronic pain were often treated dismissively, and care options were limited. But in the past decade, a significant body of research has revealed that chronic pain is not simply a symptom of something else — such as anxiety or depression — but a disease in its own right that can affect all aspects of one's life. As researchers have unraveled the enigma of chronic pain, they have learned a great deal about how pain is produced, transmitted and perceived, which has lead to innovative treatments aimed at overall improvement in quality of life. This month, we turn to board-certified interventional pain management specialist Madan K. Raj, MD, for insight into advances in pain management for patients here on Long Island. Our Legal Ease article focuses on accommodating patients under Section 504 of the Federal Rehabilitation Act of 1973. This means that "no qualified individual" with a disability in the United States shall be excluded from, denied the benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination under any program or activity that receives federal financial assistance. Greg Reilly and Adam Guttell, Partners in Martin Clearwater & Bell's Employment & Labor Practice Group offer professional insight with emphases on avoiding litigation. Our special clinical section delves into some of the amazing outcomes for patients who undergo bariatric surgery. The success of bariatric procedures is arguably related as much to their impact on comorbidities, such as diabetes, as to their ability to facilitate weight loss. We also examine prospects for new interventions stemming from findings that work-related stress and disturbed sleep have a reciprocal relationship. And our Bariatrics Update presents a variety of statistics related to bariatrics and obesity. Keep the region's healthcare providers and executives informed about innovative treatments, leading-edge technology and other aspects of your practice through MD News.
