Put Pain in the Past NOW LOCATED AT KISHHEALTH SYSTEM PHYSICIAN GROUP, DEKALB, KISHHEALTH SYSTEM PAIN MANAGEMENT CENTER OFFERS IMPROVED ACCESS FOR PATIENTS IN PAIN. Is Pain in Your Head? "The mind and body are connected," says Mary McKinnell, LCPC, therapist at KishHealth System Behavioral Health Services. "If we feel physical pain, we hurt emotionally." According to McKinnell, physical pain can limit a patient's ability to be active and interact with others, leading to forms of mental and emotional distress, such as loneliness. Emotions can influence pain as well. "Addressing emotional health makes pain feel more manageable," McKinnell says. "Ways to do this include addressing distorted thoughts, employing relaxation techniques, and scheduling pleasurable activities." If medical interventions have not adequately managed your pain, consider making a therapist or psychologist part of your pain management team. "WE EVALUATE THE type of pain a patient is experiencing and what's worked in the past, and monitor how well they're responding to therapy," says Gregory Arnold, MD, medical director of KishHealth System Pain Management Center in DeKalb and Sandwich. "Weoffer comprehensive, multimodal pain management, which allows us to create individualized care plans." In addition to providing surgical anesthesia, Dr. Arnold and his colleagues often see patients experiencing pain from arthritis, cancer, fibromyalgia, surgery, and herniated or ruptured discs. To alleviate pain, multidisciplinary treatments including spinal cord stimulation, physical therapy, massage therapy, mindfulness, intravenous medications, and injections are available. KishHealth System Pain Management Center uses computed tomography imaging to target injections precisely, which is not found everywhere. Catheters for in-home infusions are alsoavailable. RELIEF MADE EASIER The new location offers a greater scope of services, so patients can see multiple providers during one visit. The setting is also more conducive to supporting pain management. "Our quiet, clinic setting is a calm environment which helps healing and to reduce pain," Dr. Arnold says. 2 * Some procedures are performed at the hospital.
