BY EMMY B.
AT THE END OF THE DAY…
I'LL ADMIT IT: I'M A CREATURE OF ROUTINE.
OFTEN TIMES I DO the same thing day in and day out. I eat the same breakfast, drive the same route to work,
and watch the same TV programs at night. The weekend comes and I spend some of my time working around the
house, some visiting with my Mom, and a lot of it reading! And then I start all over again on Monday. I rationalize my
predictability by saying I'm just enjoying my comfort zone. But the beginning of a new year seems like a good time to
think about shaking things up a bit. I may start small by going to lunch at a new café. Or striking up a conversation with
the new neighbor who moved in next door. Or maybe I'll make good on my New Year's resolution and try a new workout
routine! Then maybe I'll cast my net a little wider by joining a book club or taking up a new hobby. Maybe I'll even plan
a vacation for this year. It's good to take myself off of auto-pilot once in a while. Doing so helps stretch my imagination
and encourages me to grow.
Note to self: In the words of Ralph Waldo Emerson, "Do not go where the path may lead, go instead where there is no
path and leave a trail."
