T he d i rec t or y i s searchable by location, materials produced and accepted, services available, and scale of products. ■ — By Melissa Moore A Home's Hemp Lining A CENTURIES-OLD BUILDING MATERIAL used for breathable and fl exible insulation that is impervious to mold and pests gives new meaning to green building — but it's most often associ- ated with narcotics. Hempcrete, a f ireproof a nd tox in-free product made of the woody, inner lining of the Cannabis sativa plant combined with water and lime, has recently been used in severa l Europea n bui lding projects, a nd archaeologists have found hemp-based build- ing materials in Merovingian bridges dating back to 500 A.D. The core of the cannabis plant has high silica content, which streng thens its bond with the water and lime mixture and produces a cement-like material weighing a fraction of the weight of concrete. Although the material is durable, it is not load bearing.
