It Takes A Community On August 8, a crowd of 1,000 people cheered as 16 teams hit the water for the inaugural St. Lawrence River Dragon Boat Challenge. Each team of 20 paddlers pulled together to propel a 46-foot dragon boat through the wake in pursuit of first prize. THE FASTEST TIMES went to teams who learned how to work together, synchronizing their strokes to the beat of the team's drummer. At the end of the day, the River Tarts came out on top with a time of 1 minute, 14 seconds. Proceeds from the event were intended to benet the Children's Miracle Network and the North Country Community Foundation. SIGN UP NOW This was the rst time for the new event, but it certainly won't be the last. Registration is now open for the 2016 Oars Up For a Good Cause Bonnie and dick Wright's generosity helped lead the expansion of the Richard E. Winter Cancer Center, a building named after Bonnie's father. IN 1994, DONORS partnered with Claxton-Hepburn Medical Center to fund the Cancer Center, building a new wing in July 2014. "The Wright Cancer Wing, named after Bonnie and Dick, houses a new Trilogy linear accelerator, which allows us to treat many types of breast and prostate cancer in as few as ve treatments instead of 40," says Jim Michaels, Claxton-Hepburn Foundation executive director. "We can also now treat brain and lung cancers here in the North Country. Patients no longer have to drive three hours for treatment." A SPECIAL THANKS "This project was made possible through a community of donor support, including gifts from the Wrights, the Claxton-Hepburn Auxiliary, and the many donors whose names are listed on our donor wall in appreciation," Michaels says. "Whether you gave $5 or $500,000, it all makes a difference, and we are incredibly grateful." The Foundation relies on donor support to bring the new technology to Claxton-Hepburn that allows us to provide top-notch health care locally. Want to learn about more ways to donate?
