When Roberto Novoa, MD, was recruited from Cleveland Clinic to lead Aultman's heart surgery program 20 years ago, it was with one goal in mind — to establish a program of excellence. And he certainly did. Aultman Heart Center's survival rates for coronary care, interventions and surgery are among the best in the nation according to HealthGrades. Dr. Novoa gives credit to 'the team', one of the newest members of which is Giovanni Ciuffo, MD. In our first feature story, we visit University Hospitals new $3million Joint Replacement Center. Located on the 6th floor of the Lerner Tower on the UHCMC campus, the Center offers the one thing the UH joint replacement program has been missing: a dedicated space. Our second feature story focuses on transoral robotic surgery (TORS) of the throat. TORS is the newest minimally invasive option for benign and select malignant tumors of the pharynx and larynx. The benefits far outweigh those of open surgery. Patient self-diagnosis and treatment is reaching alarming levels. In a very interesting Q&A, we address this issue.
