EXPERTS IN RELIEF WITH MORE THAN 65 years of combined experience in treating pain — in addition to board certification in both anesthesiology and pain management — the physicians with Tennessee Valley Pain Consultants fill the large pain-services gap between primary care providers and surgeons. RONALD L. COLLINS, M.D., DAAPM Dr. Collins graduated from the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) and the University of Alabama School of Medicine in Birmingham. He completed his residency in anesthesia and a fellowship in pain management at UAB Hospital in 1992 and has been practic- ing pain management in Huntsville for the past 20 years. MORRIS L. SCHERLIS, M.D., DAAPM Dr. Scherlis gained his medical degree at the University of Maryland School of Medicine. He completed his residency at University of Maryland-Shock Trauma and completed a pain- management fellowship at Texas Tech University. He's been serving the Huntsville area for more than 16 years. RODDIE R. GANTT, M.D., DABA Dr. Gantt studied at Birmingham-Southern College and the University of Alabama School of Medicine in Birmingham. He completed a four-year anesthesiology residency and a pain management fellowship at the University of Kentucky in Lexington, after which he taught anesthesia and pain management at the National Naval Medical Center in Bethesda, MD. JOHN R. ROBERTS, M.D., DABA Dr. Roberts graduated from University Medical Center in Jackson, MS. He then entered into the United States Air Force, where he completed training in anesthesiology followed by a fel- lowship in pain management at the University of Texas. He has been practicing in the Huntsville area for 10 years. Valley Pain Consultants are double board-certified in pain management and anesthesiology enables patients to receive the most advanced pain-management techniques available while ensuring that patients have sedation for all therapeutic interventions, which lessens discomfort and anxiety. The physicians at Tennessee Valley Pain Consultants have expertise in treat- ing complex nerve pain syndromes using diagnostic and therapeutic interventions to determine the source of pain. "Spinal cord stimulation is among the most advanced technologies available for our patients," says John R. Roberts, M.D., DABA, anesthesiologist and pain- management physician with Tennessee Valley Pain Consultants. "These devices act like pacemakers for pain and also give us the ability to program them specifi- cally to each patient's pain pattern." This minimally invasive procedure works by inhibiting painful impulses before they travel up the spine to the brain. Spinal cord stimulation has a high success rate and provides a quicker, less-involved recovery time than do more invasive surgical options. Research-Based Relief The physicians of Tennessee Valley Pain Consultants participate in multiple research protocols and have conducted extensive studies in new and progressive pain medications as well interventions and implant technologies. This constant exposure to research keeps them on the pulse of specialized, up-to-date therapies. "We offer the highest standard of care in pain management, including the most advanced nonsurgical services, such as injection therapy, medication manage- ment and even psychological support," says Roddie R. Gantt, M.D., DABA, anesthesiologist and pain-management physician with Tennessee Valley Pain Consultants. "From cancer pain to chronic pain, medication management to side-effect management, we offer patients hope when other options have failed."
