This publication in no way seeks to serve as a substitute for professional medical care. Consult your physician before undertaking any form of medical treatment or adopting any exercise program or dietary guidelines. 2830 Calder Street Beaumont, TX 77702 For the last decade, Mona Bias' dream was to retire from Lowe's Home Improvement in Port Arthur and move back to her hometown of Rayne, Louisiana. After living in Port Arthur for 40 years, reconnecting with her family and friends was important to her. But then cancer happened. In 2006, Mona was diagnosed with breast cancer. Surgery removed the tumor in 2008, but in 2009, Mona was diagnosed with colon cancer, which she is still fighting. Throughout both diagnoses and treatments, she has chosen CHRISTUS Southeast Texas St. Mary as her treatment facility. "If someone asks how it's going, they are surprised when I tell them it's going awesome," Mona says. "Much of my positive attitude is because of the nurses and doctors at St. Mary." Mona notes that the nurses at St. Mary Outpatient Chemotherapy and Infusion Center have been kind, encouraging and most importantly — compassionate. "They show every day that they care about their patients. They even check to see if I need simple things like a blanket or a glass of water," Mona says. "I could go elsewhere for treatment, but I choose to come here. They're like family to me here." St. Mary Registered Nurse Donna Bernard says Mona's spirit has been infectious. "She is always so upbeat, and we love to care for her," Donna says of Mona. "I truly enjoy giving our patients hope and love." Mona says her favorite things to do in her spare time are to visit, pray and sing with the sick at local nursing homes. "I also love going to church. I thank God that I know Him. When I got my diagnosis, I had no fear because of Him, and with my nurses being so encouraging, I just feel better," Mona says. "I wouldn't trade these nurses for the world."
