Over the years, MD News has developed a reputation as a credible source of information about innovative treatments, techniques and practitioners, and that gives us the opportunity to interview researchers who are on the leading edge of medical discovery. This March–April digital edition of MD News is no exception. Researchers at Georgetown University Medical Center have discovered that repurposing a leukemia drug holds promise for reversing some of the eects of Parkinson's disease and Lewy body dementia. Though the patient pool was small, all subjects in the study saw improved motor skills and cognitive function after using the medication. Our special clinical section on geriatrics examines the findings. It also looks into indications that pain and other serious symptoms have remained prevalent or even increased during the final year of many patients' lives — despite long-standing calls to enhance end-of-life care. In our second clinical section, on men's health, we talk with a London-based scientist whose research team found that approximately half of a man's risk of developing testicular cancer is related to heredity. While this form of cancer is less prevalent than some others, its heritability is much higher. We also explore encouraging findings that for some prostate cancer patients, hypofractionated radiation therapy is as eective as a longer course of treatment in terms of five-year disease-free survival. One of our national features takes an in-depth look at the use of telemedicine to address the shortage of mental healthcare providers. The second notes that a significant need for charitable medical care remains since the implementation of the ACA.
