The Zone is an innovative therapeutic and educational environment for patients and their families, providing Mount Sinai's pe- diatric patients with celebrity visitors and a number of special programs. A state-of-the-art, in-house television studio called KidZone TV, or KZTV, is a main aspect of The Zone. KZTV broadcasts origi - nal and interactive live and pre-recorded programming to patient rooms on a dedi- cated television channel. Patients who are well enough can participate either behind or in front of the camera. Those who must stay in their rooms or treatment areas can watch KZTV on their televisions and call in to the studio via an on-air phone line. Along with game shows, KZTV often hosts special visit - ing guests, including celebrity performers and athletes who take part in question-and- answer sessions with patients. In addition to the KZTV studio, The Zone offers other activities and spaces, including a movie theater, a library, a recreation and game room with crafts areas, and a special quiet room where patients and families can relax on their own or with the aid of medita - tion specialists or therapists. The Bariatric Surgical Center at White Plains Hospital has been accredited as a Comprehensive Center under the Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery Accreditation and Quality Improvement Program (MBSAQIP), a joint program of the American College of Surgeons and the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery. White Plains Hospital is one of only two hospitals in Westchester to receive the national ac - creditation, which recognizes programs that meet the highest standards for safety and quality of care in bariatric surgery patients. The MBSAQIP Standards ensure that bariatric surgical patients receive a mul - tidisciplinary program, not just a surgi- cal procedure, which improves patient outcomes and long-term success. The White Plains Hospital accredited center offers preoperative and postoperative care designed specifically for severely obese patients. Surgeons at the hospital currently perform state-of-the-art bariatric surgery including laparoscopic Roux-en-Y gastric bypass and sleeve gastrectomy. The bariatric surgery program at White Plains Hospital was started in 1998 by William Homan, MD, and his wife, Valerie, re - spected pioneers in the bariatric community. Under their direction, the program received the first Center of Excellence designation in Westchester County. The Center for Sleep Medicine at NewYork- Presbyterian/Lawrence Hospital in Bronx ville recently received program ac- creditation from the American Academy of Sleep Medicine (A A SM). To receive accreditation for a five-year period, a sleep center must meet or exceed all standards for professional health care as designated by the AASM. These standards address core areas such as personnel, facility and equipment, policies and procedures, data acquisition, patient care, and quality assur - ance. Additionally, the sleep center's goals must be clearly stated and include plans for positively affecting the quality of medical care in the community it serves. To learn more about the treatment of sleep disorders or to schedule a consultation or sleep study, please call the Center for Sleep Medicine at 914-787-4400 or visit www.nyplawrence.org. Intuitive Surgical has designated Jerald Wishner, MD, FACS, FASCRS, and Northern Westchester Hospital (NWH) as a Designated Training Epicenter for Robot-assisted Colon and Rectal Surgery — a peer-to-peer training network for the da Vinci Surgical System. Fewer than 20 sites in the United States have received this designation. Regionally — from the District of Columbia to Syracuse — NWH is one of two designated sites. ■ M D N E W S .
