With a spring groundbreaking on schedule at the site of the new UP Health System โ€“ Marquette, the first phase of campus development will consist of brownfield cleanup at the former industrial area where the new hospital campus will be constructed. THE NEW FACILITY'S construction timeline calls for cleanup and site preparation of the 37-acre Roundhouse Property throughout the summer. UP Health System โ€“ Marquette's new $300-plus million medical campus will include a state-of-the-art 265-bed hospital and 80,000-square-foot medical office building. Site and facility designs are nearing completion, and planning for full- scale construction of the new facility is progressing, according to UP Health System Regional President Jim Bogan. "A project of this magnitude is incredibly complex, with multiple components either underway or being planned simultaneously," Bogan says. "It's important that the public know we are moving forward on all fronts, and we still anticipate occupying our new campus in late 2018." A major milestone in the project took place over the winter, when the purchase of the Roundhouse Property from the city of Marquette was finalized, paving the way for a major development push. "e purchase was a perfect blending of cooperation between our health system and city administrative and elected officials," Bogan says. "From the time we expressed interest in keeping our new hospital within the city, Marquette officials have been exemplary in their professionalism and enthusiasm for the future of our new medical campus." e completed purchase includes the Roundhouse Property located between Baraga and Washington streets. Situated close to downtown and just one mile from Northern Michigan University, the property offers easy access to the new hospital campus from various main and secondary roads. It also is close to many community amenities. e Roundhouse site was used for industrial purposes for generations. Redeveloping the land as a new medical campus will offer major benefits to the Marquette community and add to the ongoing revitalization of the downtown area. e brownfield cleanup within key areas of the construction site is now a priority, which will lead to full-scale construction. e city approved rezoning needed to proceed with the project last fall. UP Health System โ€“ Marquette will continue to occupy its current facilities at the College Avenue location until the new hospital is complete and operational. Hospital leaders will work closely with city officials and the community to explore future uses of its current property. Visit uphealthsystem.com to learn more about the new hospital.
