THIS PUBLICATION IN NO WAY SEEKS TO SERVE AS A SUBSTITUTE FOR PROFESSIONAL MEDICAL CARE. CONSULT YOUR DOCTOR BEFORE UNDERTAKING ANY FORM OF MEDICAL TREATMENT OR ADOPTING ANY EXERCISE PROGRAM OR DIETARY GUIDELINES. St. Anthony Hospital 2801 St. Anthony Way Pendleton, OR 97801-3800 CHI St. Anthony Hospital has been a proud sponsor of the Pendleton Farmers Market for seven years. Most of us have heard the phrase "Eat your greens"— but what about the other colors? Learn how a colorful diet is the best recipe for good health. "The different colors of produce mean those foods are high in certain antioxidants and phytonutrients," says Christine Guenther, RD, LD, nutritionist with CHI St. Anthony Hospital. "These fruits and vegetables help keep our cells healthy by reducing inflammation and oxidation." WHAT'S IN A COLOR? Red- and bright pink fruits and veggies have been shown to reduce risk of diabetes, heart disease, high blood pressure, and Alzheimer's disease, as well as breast, prostate, and skin cancers. Greens help protect your eyes and minimize the risk of cancerous tumors. Yellows and oranges contribute to improving immunity, preserving eyesight and strong bones, and lowering risk of cancer and heart attacks. Blues and purples help protect you from cancer, high blood pressure, diabetes complications, heart attacks, and age-related memory problems. White fruits and veggies cut down cholesterol, lower blood pressure, and boost your immune system. "Aim for at least 5 different colors each day to help boost your body's natural defense system," Christine says. Coloring Your Health Come join the fun every Friday evening at the Pendleton Farmers Market on Main Street. The market's open-air atmosphere provides a community gathering place where visitors have access to affordable, freshly picked produce and handmade goods, in addition to providing a profitable business opportunity for local merchants. Gear up for your visit to the Market with these tips: Spend time mingling with the various vendors. You can learn a great deal about the products for sale—such as how their fruits and vegetables are grown. Add variety to your shopping list. Vendors typically offer seasonal options, and their selections can change from week to week. Try new fruits, vegetables or recipes. Bring your own reusable bags to carry home your purchases. The Pendleton Farmers Market is held from 4 to 7 p.m. on Fridays—mid-May through mid-October—in the 300 block of Main Street. Market on Main
