HealthAlliance Hospital campuses in Kingston rank No. 2 and No. 3 for having the lowest hospital-acquired condition rates in New York state, the U.S. Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) reported. The campuses are also the only Hudson Valley hospitals in the CMS state Top 10 for having the lowest hospital-acquired condition (HAC) rates. HACs are potentially deadly medical conditions or complications a patient can pick up during a hospital stay. They can include healthcare-associated infections, including pneumonia, as well as other conditions, such as side effects from a bad drug interaction, a transfusion with the wrong blood type, or bedsores. North Salem High School seniors Sean Leuschner and Anna Mattamana are the recipients of the Putnam Hospital Center Auxiliary's inaugural col- lege scholarships. Leuschner and Mattamana each received $500 to go toward their educa- tional pursuits. Both have volunteered at Putnam Hospital Center and completed more than 100 hours of service. Leuschner and Mattamana are interested in working in health care. Leuschner says he is deciding between the State University of New York at Buffalo and the State University of New York at Stony Brook, where he plans to study nursing and possibly medi- cine. He has volunteered at Putnam Hospital Center for two years in trans- port and now as a student intern in the Emergency Department. Mattamana plans to enroll as a pre- med student at either Tulane University or the State University of New York at Binghamton.
