Mid Hudson 05-852 PUBLISHER from the "... [O]nce a person overcomes a disability through his own courage, determination and hard work, he has a depth of spirit you and I know little about. ... [This] is a branch of medicine in which the patient has more power than the doctor in setting the limits and possibilities ... ." Those are the words of Dr. Howard Rusk, considered the father of rehabilitation, in his autobiography, A World to Care For. Many advances in rehabilitation have occurred over the past several decades, changing the game for patients, and exciting research continues. At the heart of innovation in rehabilitation, Helen Hayes Hospital plays an important role in improving function and quality of life for patients here in the Hudson Valley region. For professional insight into the field, we turned to Marjorie King, MD, FACC, MAACVPR, Chief Medical Oˆcer, and Glenn Seliger, MD, Director of Traumatic Brain Injury Rehabilitation Services at Helen Hayes Hospital, to guide us through the plethora of new therapies and technologies advancing treatment. Dr. King describes Helen Hayes Hospital as a "hidden gem" that has combined multidisciplinary medical sta•, specialized therapy and nursing sta•, and advanced technology to create a culture devoted to patient-centered, quality care. Also in this issue, we head up the line to Northern Dutchess Hospital, which two years ago embarked on a $47 million renovation. On Feb. 13, 2016, the project came to life when patients were transferred to the three-floor, state-of-the art Martin and Toni Sosno• Pavilion. Amenities include oversized, private rooms, private bathrooms, wall-mounted flat-screen TVs and pullout sofa beds for guests. Also in February, the hospital opened its state-of-the-art surgical department. John Sabia, MD, Vice President of Medical A•airs at Northern Dutchess Hospital, walks us through the process and reflects on achieving the team's goal to "keep patients local." Our national feature delves into indications that a significant need for charitable medical care remains since the implementation of the ACA — and inspiring signs that physicians and other clinicians are continuing to bridge the gap by providing that care. MD News can put information about your organization's advanced technologies and treatments in front of referring physicians throughout the region.
