CONNECT // 9 patient + health [PHOTO] Steven Spivey, MD INNOVATIVE TECHNOLOGY Making a Difference When Lisa Steele-Edmondson of Cartersville scheduled her hysterectomy at Cartersville Medical Center, she never envisioned undergoing a robotic-assisted procedure. Traditionally open, vaginal or laparoscopic procedures, many hysterectomies at Cartersville Medical Center are now performed minimally invasively with the assistance of the da VinciĀ® Si Surgical System. "Dr. Spivey [MD, Harbin Clinic OBGYN at Cartersville Medical Center] approached me prior to having my operation and gave me the option of undergoing the da Vinci procedure," says Steele-Edmondson. "I was thrilled to learn the benefits of da Vinci surgery, such as minimal scaring, a quicker recovery time, and less chance of infection. The choice was easy for me." Paving the Way One of the first hospitals in northwest Georgia to offer the da Vinci System, Cartersville Medical Center continues to prove its commitment toward technology for enhanced patient care. The da Vinci System enables surgeons to make smaller incisions much more precisely. During the procedure, the surgeon remains in total control, but he or she has robotic aid assistance, which means improved visualization and access and increased range of motion. Getting Back to Life Although anxious to undergo surgery, Steele-Edmondson was excited to reap the benefits of such state-of-the-art equipment. "Between my family life and a busy career, my time is stretched thin," says Steele-Edmondson. "The da Vinci hysterectomy procedure cut my recovery time in half, allowing me to get back to the things I enjoy more quickly." Quality Care You Can Count On At Redmond Regional Medical Center, we offer quality care for the routine and the unexpected. Calvin Snow of Rome, Ga., knows firsthand that Redmond Regional staff is there for you no matter the circumstance. When 59-year-old Snow was treated for diverticulitis at Redmond Regional in 2004, he never envisioned suffering additional medical emergencies years later. "After Dr. Paul Brock [Harbin Clinic General Surgeon] treated my diverticulitis and discharged me, my health was back on track," says Snow. "Little did I know that I would be back to undergo a hemorrhoid operation and to receive life-saving stroke care." A Familiar Place to Turn Although Snow was cured of stomach pain stemming from his diverticulitis, he was readmitted to Redmond Regional in 2007 to treat a ruptured hemorrhoid. "I suffered from hemorrhoids for years, so I was actually relieved to learn that I required surgery and would get some relief," says Snow. "Under the surgical care of Dr. Brock, I once again received efficient and effective treatment." Four years later, Snow found himself back in the hospital for the third time after suffering a stroke. "One October morning in 2011, I was walking down the hallway of my home when I suddenly lost the ability to speak," says Snow. "My wife immediately called 911, and I was transported to Redmond Regional in a matter of minutes." As soon as Snow arrived in the Emergency Department, the staff stepped into action. "I am so thankful for the care I received after experiencing multiple health incidents, " says Snow. "The medical team at Redmond Regional has saved my life numerous times. I wouldn't think of going anywhere else for compassionate, quality medical care."
