Maogram That Fit Your Plans The Choice is Yours In October 2015, the American Cancer Society updated its breast cancer screening guidelines to recommend that women should begin having annual screening mammograms at age 45, and then switch to exams every other year at 55. Earlier this year, in its final recommendations on breast cancer screening, the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force advised women to have a screening mammogram every two years from age 50 to 74. These organizations provide valuable frameworks for decision-making, but the choice of when to begin having annual screening mammograms rests with each woman and her physician. "Most radiologists recommend having annual screening mammograms beginning at age 40, as this saves the most lives," says Sean Owens, MD, diagnostic radiologist at Frankfort Regional Medical Center. "Annual screening mammography has been shown to reduce breast cancer deaths by 35 percent." Speak with your physician about a screening mammography schedule that makes sense for you, based on your risk factors for breast cancer. Having a mammogram to screen for breast cancer is a no-brainer, but finding the time to schedule one takes some thought. Frankfort Regional Medical Center is making scheduling this important imaging test easier and more convenient. Frankfort Regional—an American College of Radiology- accredited facility—offers digital screening mammograms with no physician's order required. Patients can schedule at their convenience if they are age 40 and older and have not had a screening mammogram in at least 365 days. "All patients need is a relationship with a primary care physician so we can send the report to this provider for follow-up care," says Tyler Winks, BSIS, RT(R)(CT)(MR), ARRT, Director of Diagnostic Imaging at Frankfort Regional. "The physician doesn't need to be affiliated with the hospital for patients to take advantage of this streamlined scheduling process." We also offer a solution to calendar crunch. If you're having trouble fitting a mammogram in between work and family responsibilities, schedule a screening on Mammo Monday—held on the first and third Monday* of each month. Appointments are available until 5:30 p.m. on these days. Â To schedule your screening mammogram, call Frankfort Regional Central Scheduling at 502-226-1665.
