Experts estimate sleep apnea aects roughly 20 percent of American adults, but many of these cases remain undiagnosed. When sleep quantity (hours of sleep) and quality (the degree to which one feels rested upon waking) are negatively aected by sleep disorders such as sleep apnea, serious consequences can result. If left untreated, sleep apnea can lead to or worsen preexisting health conditions, including depression, diabetes, hypertension, heart disease and stroke. Sleep deprivation resulting from sleep disorders can also lead to accidents due to daytime fatigue. Sleep apnea is a real problem in America, as well as in upstate New York, and St. Joseph's Hospital's Sleep Labs and Franciscan Companies are here to help.
