substantial bleeding in the chest cavity. The wound put him at risk of not being able to breathe effectively. If he hadn't received the care he did, he could have died." Minutes after arriving at the hospital, Mohmund underwent surgery. Nelson Rosen, MD, associate trauma medical director at Cohen Children's, stitched the wounds in Mohmund's lung through an incision between his ribs. Mohmund spent nearly a week recovering in the hospital, first in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit and then on a regular patient floor. He returned home after discharge and resumed classes at Bethpage High School. Giving Thanks Nearly a month after the attack, Mohmund returned to Cohen Children's with Nawid and reunited with Dr. Rosen and other members of the pediatric trauma team. "I am here today and feel grateful and blessed for Dr. Rosen and his team," Mohmund told a reporter. To Dr. Prince, Mohmund's story perfectly encapsulates what it means to be an American College of Surgeons-verified Level 1 Pediatric Trauma Center. "Mohmund's case highlights the uncertain nature of trauma," Dr. Prince said. "No one knows when something like what he experienced will happen. At Cohen Children's, we have the resources, capacity and expertise to be a regional destination for children who are gravely injured." The Only 1 The American College of Surgeons recently verified Cohen Children's Medical Center as a Level 1 Pediatric Trauma Center — the only one of its kind in New York City and Long Island. To achieve this distinction, the hospital met extensive, rigorous criteria. Foundations of the Cohen Children's commitment to pediatric trauma care include: – Dedicated treatment spaces — The Pediatric Emergency Department features two trauma bays adjacent to a computed tomography scanner for swift access when needed. The trauma bays can convert to operating rooms (ORs), if necessary. The hospital also features more than 30 ORs and a Pediatric Intensive Care Unit with nearly 30 beds. – Pediatric specialists — A roster of 160-plus full-time clinicians and multiple pediatric specialists respond to trauma cases. – Advanced treatments — Cohen Children's offers the only Children's Heart Surgery Program located on Long Island. – Prevention — An on-site injury prevention coordinator is dedicated to pediatric trauma. The coordinator educated more than 10,000 people — patients and providers — in 2015. – Quality improvements — Treatment outcomes data are submitted to the American College of Surgeons Trauma Quality Improvement Program database to see how they compare with other hospitals and identify areas for improvement, both internally and nationally. – Research — A dedicated laboratory at the Feinstein Institute for Medical Research allows Cohen Children's to study inflammatory pathways. This gives clinicians insight into how inflammation is activated when kids are injured. Furthermore, investigation into car-seat safety is another example of ongoing inquiry. emergency care CohenChildrens.com 5 COHEN CHILDREN'S MEDICAL CENTER
