Central Pennsylvania 05-868 PUBLISHER from the ............................................... Susan Ecenbarger PUBLISHER Central Pennsylvania ............................................... secenbarger@mdnews.com 717-575-6691 ............................................... @MDNewsCentralPA Welcome to our fourth annual MD News CEO Edition, in which you will find information about, from and for physicians in Central Pennsylvania. We have brought together insights from local healthcare leaders on a wide range of challenges and trends shaping the future of health care in our region. As the medical landscape continues to change as a result of technological advances and the evolving needs of patients and physicians, these leaders share their knowledge and expertise regarding strategies for improving patient outcomes. We learn about the positive impact for patients of the Lancaster General Health/Penn Medicine partnership, including how that collaboration has enhanced cancer care. We discuss a genetic approach to targeting cancer, as well as advanced lab services, personalized medicine, transplant evaluation and tumor boards. Clinical care, research, education and community health are the focus of our Penn State Health article. Penn State Health continues to advance. Technologies including leading-edge robotic equipment allow for greater intraoperative precision. Patients can take part in more than 500 research studies, and there are new programs for medical school students as well as community health initiatives such as the LionNet telestroke program. Advancing cardiovascular care at the PinnacleHealth CardioVascular Institute and incorporating innovations in surgical technology and techniques at the PinnacleHealth Spine Institute are key topics in another article. In partnership with the National Institutes of Health, PinnacleHealth is participating in dozens of landmark clinical trials that are bringing new therapies in cardiovascular medicine to the region. WellSpan Health discusses its new partnership with Philhaven, its expansion of behavioral health services to the community and its goal of redefining how patients receive mental health services. This will be accomplished by enhancing access to mental health care in the family practice setting. The WellSpan/Philhaven partnership covers a four-county region, with six hospitals and 140 patient care locations. From our national desk, we examine the pivotal role that experts believe physicians play in making clinical integration successful. We also o†er perspectives on practice management, the business of medicine and personal finance. As always, thank you for reading MD News. We welcome your comments, suggestions and continued interest. Sincerely, Susan Ecenbarger
