JEWISH HOSPITAL and Saint Joseph East, both part of KentuckyOne Health, have received Blue Distinction Center+ designation from Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield in the areas of hip and knee replacement and spine surgery. This means the hospitals have met — and exceeded — benchmarks for quality care. What Sets Blue Distinction Centers Apart? To be considered for Blue Distinction Center+ designation, hospitals have to participate in a lengthy application process. Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield considers the number of patients who have had orthopedic surgery at the hospital, as well as the results people have achieved. Whether or not community members developed infections following surgery, complication rates, hospital readmission rates and cost effi ciency are among the metrics considered. "Blue Distinction Center+ designation shows the commitment we've made to our community," said Dianna Madden, director of quality care at Saint Joseph East. "We take our orthopedic surgery program very seriously and are dedicated to becoming a true center of excellence." In addition to high-quality orthopedic surgery programs, Blue Distinction Center+ hospitals feature the latest advancements in technology and technique and are equipped to handle emergencies. Accredited hospitals must have an electronic health record system, 24-hour access to a pharmacy, emergency physician coverage and on-site diagnostic imaging, according to Deanna Parker, director of nursing at Jewish Hospital. KentuckyOne Health has also gone one step further by rounding out its programs with patient education. "Our patients come fi rst," Parker said. "At Jewish Hospital, for example, care begins even before surgery. Our patients participate in a preoperative joint academy class and have access to a health coach before and after surgery. Our goal is to ensure the people we serve receive the best care possible."
