This initiative is critical to enabling DSFHS and home care pro- fessionals to provide a safe transition for patients from hospital to home. The program operates throughout the school year, with rotating groups of medical students assigned to a member of an interprofessional home care team (a DSFHS staff nurse, physical and occupational therapist). The students accompany clinicians on home visits. DSFHS physical therapist Dan Bauman stresses safety to the students. Students see firsthand why interprofessional teamwork is essential to providing excellent patient care, and they benefit from the knowledge and role models provided by their interprofession - al teachers. While medical school teaches about treating diseases, these interprofessional home visits teach medical students to take a broader approach to medicine that can lead to better patient outcomes. Since opening its doors five years ago, Montefiore Health System's Arthur D. Emil Caregiver Support Center has recruited 30 volunteers, many of whom are former Montefiore patients or had loved ones cared for at Montefiore and had firsthand experience with the center. Volunteers are from a host of cultural backgrounds to represent the diversity of the patient community. Volunteers are trained to take the initiative to seek out individuals in need of support and help them take care of themselves, while advocating for their loved ones. The distinct style of training at the Center and compassionate staff at Montefiore has been recognized nationally by the Caregiver Action Network, the nation's leading family caregiver organization, as one of the 25 Best Practices in Patient and Family Engagement. Volunteers were also honored recently by the United Hospital Fund at its 23rd Annual Hospital Auxilian and Volunteer Achievement Awards. For more information about how to become a volunteer at the Caregiver Support Center, visit www.montefiore.org/caregiversupport or call 718-920-4191 or 718-920-4192. Coinciding with National Volunteer Week and Mayor's Recognition Day of National Service, White Plains Hospital recognized dozens of volunteers who devote their time and efforts to several causes in the county at an event co-sponsored by Volunteer New York!, an organization devoted to increasing volunteerism in Westchester and surrounding counties. Many of these volunteers are members of RSVP of Westchester, which is part of the Corporation for National and Community Service. White Plains Mayor Thomas Roach presented the 20 volunteers with certifi - cates of appreciation on behalf of the city during the event. Those interested in learning more about volunteer opportunities at White Plains Hospital should call 914-681-1225. Burke Rehabilitation Hospital in White Plains, New York, is expanding recruitment of participants for its three-year clinical trial to evaluate whether increasing brain thiamine through the use of a new drug can help slow cognitive decline in individuals with mild Alzheimer's disease or mild cognitive impairment. Thiamine (vitamin B1) is closely linked to memory and cognition. Many thiamine-dependent processes are diminished in Alzheimer's disease. The goal of this trial is to determine if increasing brain thiamine availability with the investigational drug benfotiamine will minimize the decline in glucose utilization and slow the cognitive decline associated with Alzheimer's disease. Individuals who are at least 60 years old and have a diagnosis of mild cognitive impairment or Alzheimer's disease may be eligible to par - ticipate. Study-related evaluations include laboratory, comprehensive neurological examination, neuropsychological assessments, and amy - loid and glucose PET imaging. Study participation will include follow-up visits to Burke Medical Research Institute every three months. There are no costs associated with participation in this study. This trial is supported by the National Institute on Aging and the Alzheimer's Drug Discovery Foundation. For more information about study criteria, visit burke.org/research. If you are interested in participating in the trial, please contact Rosanna Cirio, MA, at 914-597-2476 or rcirio@burke.org. ■ 2 2 White Plains Mayor Tom Roach with Alisa Kesten, Executive Director of Volunteer New York!
