Fostering the Spirit of Giving Back Swimming, hiking, campfire stories, s'mores, arts and crafts – this summer, 32 children from the local foster system will get the opportunity to enjoy time-honored camp traditions such as these at the first annual James River Royal Family KIDS Camp (RFK). "Children in the foster system represent a vital, underserved population," says Kathy Van Heukelom, assistant director of the RFK camp. "It's our goal to change their story by creating a traditional camp experience that is specifically designed with them in mind." Kathy, along with her husband, Jesse Van Heukelom, MD, a pediatrician with HRMC Physicians Clinic, felt drawn to this cause. "The program pairs children with mentors who have been specially trained to work with campers from difficult backgrounds and family situations," Dr. Jesse says. "I'll be working as a mentor. It's a mission that really speaks to my wife and me, as well as the community." The camp runs from July 11 – 15, 2016, and is available to children from Beadle, Spink, Hand, Faulk, Jerauld and Sanborn counties who have been part of the foster system in the past six months. "Together we can stop cycles of abuse, crime and drugs and make lasting impressions on the at-risk young people who live here," Dr. Jesse says. There is still time to change young lives by getting involved in the RFK camp. Coordinators are looking specifically for male volunteers. For more information about sponsoring a camper, volunteering or becoming a community partner, send a message to rfkcjamesriver@gmail.com.
