The collaborative initiative between the two hospitals, both members of Catholic Health Services of Long Island, extends the cardiac continuum of care offered to Good Samaritan Hospital Medical Center's surrounding communities. Advanced treatments now available at the South Shore hospital include on- and off-pump coronary artery bypass, valve repair/replacement and treatment for atrial fibrillation. Known as the St. Francis Heart Center at Good Samaritan, the in- novative program brings the expertise of St. Francis Hospital's open heart surgery team to the neighboring county. St. Francis Hospital is the only specialty designated cardiac center in New York state and one of the top hospitals in the 30 | Long Island MD NEWS ■ MDNEWS.COM Based on the successful treatment of more than 1,000 patients since 2001 with Gamma Knife radiosurgery, South Nassau Communities Hospital recently upgraded to the Gamma Knife Perfexion. The Perfexion system is the latest advance- ment in noninvasive radiosurgery treatment of tumors and abnormalities in the brain. South Nassau Communities Hospital was the first on Long Island to offer the Gamma Knife and is now the first on Long Island to offer the Perfexion. With the Perfexion, South Nassau Communities Hospital has the capability to treat a broad scope of disorders, in- cluding tumors at the base of the skull, le- sions in the sinuses, eye socket and neck, and multiple metastatic tumors, deep- seated tumors, and tumors close to arter- ies, nerves or other vital structures. It will also be used to treat benign tumors such as acoustic neuromas, meningiomas, and pituitary adenomas; functional disorders such as trigeminal neuralgia; arteriove- nous malformations; and other neurologi- cal conditions such as intractable cancer pain, as well as essential tremors. LIJ Medical Center's recent $300 million expansion, which includes a 10-story tower encompassing the Zuckerberg medical/surgical unit is dedicated to pa- tients undergoing cardiothoracic surgery, cardiac catheterization and electrophysi- ology procedures. The cardiovascular and thoracic unit is designed to provide the most clinically advanced levels of care. Each room is equipped with telemetry technology, allowing patients' vital signs to be monitored remotely, and bedside computers that give clinicians access to patients' electronic medical records. Each private room is equipped with a full bathroom and shower, a 42-inch flat-screen television, mini refrigerator, Internet access and desk.
