Welcome to the summer 2016 issue of MD News South Central Pennsylvania. Our primary focus is the diagnosis and advanced treat- ments available for a wide range of heart conditions through WellSpan Health. Collaborating closely to improve the lives of patients is WellSpan Heart & Vascular's team of cardiologists, electrophysiologists, and cardiothoracic and vascular surgeons. They o•er access to leading-edge technology and techniques — as well as clinical trials — that are mark- edly enhancing and expanding treatment in the region. Additionally, WellSpan Cardiology is at the forefront of performing a relatively new procedure: chronic total occlusion-percutaneous coronary intervention. For patients with blocked blood vessels, this therapy can o•er immediate improvement in their quality of life. See our cover feature on Page 6. On Page 9, we learn about WellSpan's Joint Commission- accredited ventricular assist device (VAD) destination therapy center. VADs are smaller and easier to implant than ever, and they can help patients regain independence within three to six months after implantation. We also take a look at WellSpan's extracorporeal membrane oxygenation program, which is extending life for patients with acute respiratory and/or cardiac failure and will soon achieve Center of Excellence accreditation. Learn more on Page 10. And we spotlight WellSpan's heart failure clinics throughout the region (Page 4) and the expansion of heart care in Lancaster County (Page 5). Two additional features examine WellSpan Spine Care's holistic and collaborative approach to the diagnosis and treatment of cervical, thoracic or lumbar spine conditions (Page 12) and the broad regional reach of WellSpan Pediatric Neurology (Page 18). From our national desk, we explore two promising drugs and related trials for the treatment of multiple sclerosis (Page 14) and advanced melanoma (Page 16).
