Mercy Medical Center-Centerville is known for caring for patients, but the compassion doesn't stop
there. Mercy-Centerville sta members take time to care for one another in the workplace, as well.
RECENTLY, KATHY BROWNS, RN, a member of the
Outpatient Surgery team, was diagnosed with cancer.
Recognizing that Kathy would be going through
chemotherapy and faced the prospect of losing her
hair, Pat Probasco, Administration Executive Assistant,
decided she wanted to accompany Kathy on her
journey and share in the dicult experiences.
"Cancer patients don't have a choice with a change
in their appearance, but I do, and I chose to have
my head shaved so she would have a partner going
through it with her," Pat says.
Kathy was very touched by Pat's kindness, but she
didn't want Pat to make a hasty decision she would
later regret. She asked Pat to pray about it.
When Pat and Kathy went to the hairdresser
together, Kathy insisted that the hairdresser leave
some hair on top for Pat.
"It was the middle of winter in Iowa," Kathy
explains. "I didn't want her to get sick, and I wanted
her husband, who was my coach many years ago,
to be happy with the result, especially since I
would be wearing a wig!"
Pat's desire to LiveUP by Letting Grace Be Her
Guide exemplies Mercy-Centerville's mission.
"This journey has been enlightening, and
God has placed certain people, like Pat, in my
path who've really made a dierence for me,"
Kathy says.
