To our friends, I have good news and bad news. Let's get the bad news out of the way first—the summer season seems to be rapidly flying by. While that is out of our control, what is in our control is taking advantage of our beautiful region by getting out and getting moving. And therein lies the good news, as Ogdensburg has a wealth of opportunities for outdoor activities. Whether you're hiking, swimming, cycling, or putting your golf skills to the test on your local course, there's still plenty of time to enjoy the remainder of the warm weather while reaping the rewards of improved health, as well. In this issue of Living Well, we're spotlighting several physicians who have made your health their top priority. Hopefully you've already read our cover story about our fantastic new team of orthopedic surgeons. This issue also introduces you to psychiatrist Dr. Rajasekaran—or "Dr. Raj," as he's affectionately known by his patients—and his dedication to mental health on page 3. Pediatrician Dr. Bakshi discusses the importance of addressing childhood obesity on page 4, while our director of echocardiology, Dr. Sangwan, offers tips for comprehensive cardiac care on page 5. On behalf of everyone on staff at Claxton-Hepburn Medical Center, I thank these physicians for their care and support of this community. And as always, we thank you for reading and allowing us to care for you. Sincerely, Mark Webster, FACHE PRESIDENT AND CEO Giveaway Announcement Find the hidden apple in Living Well and win a lawn mower. MEET OUR ORTHOPEDIC TRIO (CONTINUED FROM PAGE 1) expand with new technology that wasn't available before—it's all very encouraging." Having his hands in sports medicine and joint replacement procedures, Dr. Herzog believes the orthopedic surgeons at Claxton-Hepburn filled a void—bringing teamwork and continuity to the medical center. "Orthopedic specialists are able to help patients achieve significant improvement," Dr. Herzog says. "We deliver a tremendous service to people suffering from injury or pain." AS A CHILD GROWING up in Ogdensburg, medicine was a subject that always interested Josh Caruso, RPA-C, physician assistant at Claxton-Hepburn Medical Center. Josh Caruso, RPA-C "The idea of helping others and treating medical conditions was something that appealed to me," says Caruso. "After having the opportunity to observe some surgeries when I was a high school student, I knew that a hands-on approach while using clinical knowledge was the right balance for me." Caruso received a Masters in Physician Assistant Studies from the University of Nebraska before completing a physician assistant degree at the Rochester Institute of Technology. He returned to Ogdensburg to be close to family when starting one of his own with his wife, Joan. Through the orthopedics program, Caruso assists during surgical procedures and also fits patients with casts and splints and administers injections. "It's truly rewarding to see the relief on patients' faces when the pain is alleviated," he says. "I enjoy the challenge of a clinic or helping pinpoint the best way to treat a new injury." In his spare time, Caruso loves running, target shooting, and spending time with family. "The orthopedic team works well together. From the offi ce staff helping to ensure patients get what they need to the surgeons providing their sizable skill sets and deep knowledge, we can treat chronic conditions, and new and sports-related injuries." —Josh Caruso, RPA-C, physician assistant at Claxton-Hepburn Medical Center
