CHI Mercy Health's
dedication to
building a healthier
community extends
far beyond the
hospital walls.
Creating new
initiatives in
response to the
evolving needs
of Barnes County
residents is another
way we live our
mission.
In late 2015, CHI Mercy Health partnered with the City-
County Health District and the Center for Rural Health at
the University of North Dakota to complete a Community
Health Needs Assessment (CHNA). Inaccordance with
requirements from the Internal Revenue Service for
nonprot hospitals, CHI Mercy Health performs CHNAs
every three years. These assessments help guide
educational and community outreach eorts, as well as
give residents a direct say in the programs shaping Barnes
County health care.
"The future of health care centers on hospitals taking
a proactive approach with their patients," says Stephanie
Mayeld, Foundation/Mission Director at CHI Mercy Health.
"Our goal is for CHI Mercy Health to be not only a place for
the sick to nd healing, but also a place for our community
to nd programs external to the hospital that promote
healthy living."
Electronic and hard copies of the community health
needs survey were sent to Barnes County residents
between Nov. 3–20, 2015—and our community delivered!
More than 650 people responded. The top four needs that
emerged based on assessment results are:
mental health services
substance abuse
a shortage of licensed, local childcare professionals
bullying and cyberbullying
In May, CHI Mercy Health began working with local and
district leaders to create a community implementation
plan that will address these topics.
