Taking Patients' Words to Heart IN 2014, TWO councils formed—one for each hospital— to better engage patients in their care by giving them a voice in shaping key hospital projects. Each council is composed of former patients and individuals whose family members have received care at the hospital within the past three years. Members meet once a month. "Typically, a representative from a hospital department attends the meeting to discuss an idea or service that would benefit from patient and family input," says Molly Lauer, Director of Patient Relations at HSHS Sacred Heart and St. Joseph's. "Our advisors provide constructive feedback on how we can make the project, process, or educational material more patient-friendly." In their short history, the councils have had a big impact. They helped update the guidebooks every hospital patient receives at admission and led the effort to place phone-charging stations in busy waiting areas, among other efforts. "These councils add value to our mission because they're driven to help both hospitals continue to be safe, caring environments for patients," says Julia Lyons, RN, Executive Director at HSHS Sacred Heart and St. Joseph's. "They truly speak for our patients." Interested in joining the council at HSHS Sacred Heart or St. Joseph's?
