whom we a re desig ning summer homes up in Maine." The MZO GROU P desig ned t he ea rly 20th century modern home in Milton, which was built by E.W. Tarca Construction and is featured in this issue. "The project started out as a downsize but did not stay that way for long, since the client wanted a pool, wine cellar, a big garage and a kitchen large enough to accommodate a caterer," Andrew says. "I remember telling the client, who is a n apa r tment bui lder, t hat he needed a n ex per ienced cu s t om homebuilder who understood this type of construction. This house was an extremely complex project because it would eventually involve a first-floor wine cellar, an indoor swimming pool and an all-inclusive kitchen/ dining/gathering area. Our job as architects wa s to incorporate desig n a round those components while taking advantage of the Boston Harbor and Neponset River views. The client wa nted t he pool on t he roof, but at 35 feet long, it would be too massive and expensive an undertaking. That's the first reason we brought in Ed Tarca, who had an impressive portfolio of homes with indoor swimming pools. He knows how to control the humidity caused by the water and also has a great ability to bring first-rate mechanical systems, details, tile work and hardwood pieces together to make a project sing. We used a Na naWa l l system at t he pool so that in good weather, the wall can be completely open for the outdoor feel the client was looking for. In the end, the wine cellar on the first level next to the kitchen and dining area and all the details Ed incorporated into them, hit the bulls eye for this client, who is always entertaining guests."
