When it comes to caring for his patients, Stephen M. Beene, M.D., physician with CHRISTUS Provident Internal Medicine–Shreveport-Bossier, focuses on giving them the care he would want as a patient. "We'll all be patients at some point," Dr. Beene says. "Making care easier for patients provides greater continuity. We doctors act as the quarterbacks to coordinate care between patients and subspecialists in our clinic." Dr. Beene is board-certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine, as well as the National Board of Physicians and Surgeons, and has been working with CHRISTUS Shreveport-Bossier for almost three years. Outside the hospital, Dr. Beene enjoys spending time with his wife Karen N. Beene,‹M.D., neurologist, as well as his daughters and grandchildren. Last summer he became a certified sailor, a hobby he intends to continue in the future. QUARTERBACKING YOUR CARE "I feel we should simplify medical care so that the patient can better understand his or her illnesses and take care of them more eŽciently," Dr. Beene says. "On our end, this looks like educating our patients on their individual issues." Particular areas of interest for Dr. Beene include the management of diabetes and heart disease, as well as treating pulmonary illness, kidney disease and lipid disorders. "Finding out what issues concern our patients most and formulating a plan to manage these issues is only part of our job," Dr. Beene says. "We also want patients to know that we will treat them with respect and keep them functional and self-suŽcient as long as possible."‹ ✚ STEPHEN M. After attending Louisiana State University in Shreveport for both his undergraduate and medical degrees, and completing his internship and residency at the University of Arkansas, he†entered private practice in 1992, where he remained until 2012. He is a member of the Louisiana State Medical Society and the Arkansas Medical Society, as well as the American Society of Echocardiography. Dr. Beene has served as the president and CEO of Monroe Heart and Internal Medicine Associates, the president and CEO of Northeast Louisiana Lipid Clinic and the co-director of†the Diabetes Treatment Centers of†America in West Monroe.
