CREDIT UNIONS EXIST to serve members, while banks operate to make money. "Traditional banks use customers to generate profits for the owners—bank stockholders, who may live anywhere in the world," says Greg Olmsted, President and CEO of North Alabama Educators Credit Union (NAECU). "With a credit union, the owners are the members using the credit union services, so credit unions truly are locally owned and operated." Credit unions work to avoid unnecessary fees because these can add up to a he y sum in the long run. "We also typically offer lower loan rates and higher deposit rates as a way to provide more financial freedom for our members," Greg says. "As such, we make decisions based on what provides the best benefit to you." A TEAM APPROACH While credit unions benefit the local economy where they're headquartered, members do not have to stay local to take advantage of the perks provided by their credit union. Credit unions across the U.S. team together as part of the CO-OP Shared Branching Network so that local members can continue as members of their original credit union even when they travel or move to another city. It's collaboration at its finest, and credit unions have been working together like this for decades, Greg says . "We have members who use CO-OP branches all over the country," Greg says. "Once we had a member who was thinking about closing his account because he moved to Colorado, but we found a CO-OP branch less than two miles from his new home, which provided him with a way to use his account just as he had when he lived in Alabama." With more than 5,000 branches nationwide for NAECU members to choose from, CO-OP member services allow NAECU members to travel or live in other cities and continue to: → Make deposits → Withdraw funds → Make loan payments → Transfer funds between accounts → Participate in payroll check cashing → Request account history printouts Here's how it works: When you need teller services while traveling or living outside the area, locate a CO-OP Shared Branching Network participating credit union by using the convenient search tool at co-opsharedbranch.org. Inform the teller that you are an NAECU member, show him or her your account number and valid photo ID, and request the service you need. That teller will be able to assist you the same way that NAECU tellers can. FOR MORE INFORMATION ABOUT COƒOP BRANCHES AND ATM LOCATIONS, VISIT COƒOPSHAREDBRANCH.ORG. CREDIT UNIONS TAKE A DIFFERENT APPROACH TO YOUR FINANCES THAN BANKS DO, BANDING TOGETHER TO ACCOMMODATE MEMBERS. OTHER ONTHEGO OPTIONS The mobile app and Sprig mobile deposit app provide you 24/7 access to your member account. By the end of 2016, you'll be able to turn ON and OFF your debit card through the mobile app as well—a convenient feature if you temporarily misplace your card. Additionally, the CO-OP offers members over 28,000 ATMs to choose from without accruing surcharges. Small fees apply for balance inquires and transfers.
