"We have a positive, caring culture, with a group of nurses who make good decisions and provide evidence-based care. Nurses work with the whole healthcare team. Magnet designation is nursing- driven, but facilities do not achieve Magnet unless there's great collaboration and communication between all disciplines and departments." — Michelle England, MSN, RN, Chief Nursing Officer at Frankfort Regional Medical Center Know the Benefits We wouldn't strive for Magnet designation without knowing how beneficial it is for our patients. Research shows that Magnet-designated facilities have: • Higher patient satisfaction and safety • Lower mortality rates • Decreased number of falls • Higher job satisfaction among nurses • Lower reports of nurses' intention to leave their positions This year, Frankfort Regional Medical Center was re-designated as a Magnet facility by the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC). This translates to better care for patients. When Frankfort Regional got the call that it had been recertified as a Magnet facility, it represented years of hard work. Only six other hospitals in Kentucky and 7 percent nationwide have achieved Magnet designation—the highest national honor for professional nursing practice. In order to become designated, Frankfort Regional had to submit data that demonstrated achievement of ANCC's high-quality standards surrounding nursing practice, research and outcomes. The data submitted presented examples of Frankfort Regional nurses partnering with other members of the healthcare team in making a difference to patients, families and the community. "We're telling the story of nursing excellence through our Magnet document," says Michelle England, MSN, RN, Chief Nursing Officer at Frankfort Regional. "The data submitted highlights the culture of excellence that we have here at our facility and our commitment to providing the highest quality of care to our community." SETTING THE TONE To verify a Magnet culture was present, an appraisal team from the ANCC performed a three-day site visit. During the visit, the appraisers spent time with nursing leadership but spent most of their time meeting with clinical nurses. This ensures that only facilities with a true culture of caring and excellence throughout the entire nursing team are designated as Magnet facilities. For re-designation, the ANCC sets higher standards and expects to see progress from the previous certification. "Magnet designation really shows that we have nurses who are engaged in excellent patient care," says Lori Ivy, MSN, RN, CPHQ, Quality Director at Frankfort Regional. "Our nurses care about outcomes and drive change to make improvements. There's clear evidence that we are meeting and exceeding national benchmarks for every standard, and those benefits are passed to our patients."
