If invasive stroke care treatment is needed—for, say, a clot to be retrieved using a catheter and stent, called mechanical thrombectomy—then patients can be easily transferred to UK HealthCare to receive such services. Comprehensive Coverage Dr. Rose is one of two neurologists from UK HealthCare who offers stroke coverage for Frankfort Regional. He and his colleague Ayman Al-Salaimeh, MD, provide a wide range of services for strokes, seizure disorders, headaches, neuromuscular conditions and basically any neurological condition that brings patients to the hospital or occurs during their stay. These neurologists had a simple motivation: geography. "My personal mission and the reason I decided to do this is that I believe the quality of care for patients with stroke or other neurological conditions should not be determined by where they live," Dr. Rose says. What's Next for Us "We are working to obtain Primary Stroke Center accreditation from The Joint Commission (TJC)," Winks says. "This does two things: It allows us to be recognized by emergency medical services as a hospital for stroke care, and it furthers our partnership with UK HealthCare, which recently received a Comprehensive Stroke Care designation from TJC. That means they can provide the newest treatment options available—such as mechanical thrombectomy. We hope to provide an example of how primary and comprehensive institutions work together by pioneering triage and systems of care." In addition to weakness of the face and limbs and slurred speech, other, less recognized stroke symptoms can also occur, such as: • Severe dizziness • Vision changes • Severe headache "The biggest identifying factor is the speed of onset of any neurologic symptoms, such as dizziness," says Danny Rose, MD, neurologist and Medical Director of the Stroke Program at Frankfort Regional. "If symptoms appear like the flip of a light switch, call 911 and be evaluated by a physician as soon as possible." PREVENTION STARTS HERE: • Control blood pressure • Lower "bad" (LDL) cholesterol levels • Quit smoking • Control diabetes • Prioritize physical activity and a healthy diet Four out of five strokes are preventable if everyone, from all staff members to community members, knows what signs to look for and what risk factors to avoid (see "Stroke Warning Signs"). Knowing this, we keep staff members updated on new protocols and spread the word locally about stroke care throughout the community.
