BY EMMY B. Inspirations AT THE END OF THE DAY… TAKE A MOMENT FOR YOURSELF AS YOU WRAP UP A BUSY DAY AND ENJOY THESE POSITIVE THOUGHTS FROM AN HSHS SACRED HEART HOSPITAL COLLEAGUE. SACRED HEART HOSPITAL 900 W CLAIREMONT AVE EAU CLAIRE, WI 54701-5105 This publication in no way seeks to serve as a substitute for professional medical care. Consult your physician before undertaking any form of medical treatment or adopting any exercise program or dietary guidelines. I RECENTLY READ a book on cultivating a grateful heart. The author suggested that gratitude is a matter of where you choose to put your attention. To prove this point, she urged her readers to try the following experiment. For one morning, stop every hour on the hour and notice what went wrong in that time period. So I did. I started out the day with the Internet service being down, my coffee continuously getting cold because my phone kept ringing, making a mad dash to a meeting only to find it had been canceled, and to top it off, the weather was gloomy and rather depressing. As you can imagine, by noon my mood matched the weather. Then the author suggested in the afternoon, stop every hour and notice what went right. I again followed along. The Internet must have received CPR over lunch because it was back up when I returned, I received a nice compliment on an article I had written, the sun broke out in full force by 3 p.m., and I sailed through green lights on my way home from work. The author asked me to think about when I felt more alive: in the morning or in the afternoon? The answer was obvious, in the afternoon. I realized that even when things went wrong in the afternoon, focusing my attention on the positive helped me to have a grateful heart. Note to self: In this season of thankfulness, always remember, "Gratitude is an opener of locked-up blessings." (Marianne Williamson)
