Greater Kansas 05-849 PUBLISHER from the Greetings, physicians and other healthcare leaders, and thank you for reading the October/November issue of MD News Greater Kansas. While lung cancer is the most lethal of all cancers, a recently developed test can provide early detection for at-risk patients. In our cover feature, we examine the Via Christi Cancer Outreach and Risk Assessment program, which oŽers a low-dose CT scan to patients who meet certain criteria. The test can significantly increase a patient's chance of survival. Also in this issue, Surgical Specialists shares the news that it is seeing patients at an additional location on Wichita's east side and has added surgeon Adam Misasi, MD. In addition, we take a look at Via Christi Direct, which smooths and streamlines the round-the-clock transfer of patients to the health system's three acute-care hospitals in Wichita. We hear from Vigilias Telehealth as well. Patients in many rural areas lack access to specialty care. Wichita- based Vigilias makes innovative use of telemedicine capabilities to meet that need. Another feature spotlights the expansion of Via Christi's pulmonology department to six physicians. The highly trained physicians have expertise in the latest diagnostic technologies. And we profile Maya Estephan, MD, who has joined the Wichita practice of the Arthritis and Rheumatology Clinics of Kansas. She emphasizes a long-term, relationship-based approach to treatment. Our national feature gauges provider perceptions of nurse practitioners and physician assistants. One of our clinical features reviews findings that many childhood cancer survivors face age-accelerating chronic conditions. Another assesses prospects for using spider venom to relieve pain from irritable bowel syndrome. We also evaluate new medical devices and explore issues surrounding finance and physician recruitment. Be sure to check out our expanded Hospital Rounds as well to get up to speed about the people and organizations that are advancing care in the region. Highlight your clinical and technological capabilities by leveraging MD News' wide-ranging print and digital platforms. Reach me at 620-249-7462 or jnorris@mdnews.com to strategize.
