Lower Hudson/Bronx 05-841 PUBLISHER from the ............................................... Dan Senkiw PUBLISHER Lower Hudson/Bronx ............................................... dansenkiw@mdnews.com 914-967-6565 ............................................... @MDNewsMetroNY Welcome to MD News Lower Hudson/Bronx. This issue offers an overview of innovative treatments and techniques, as well as research advances. Our cover feature delves into the comprehensive, inter- disciplinary care of patients and families facing a terminal illness. Palliative care focuses primarily on comfort and support, and that's exactly what Je‚rey T. Berger, MD, FACP, Division Chief of Palliative Medicine and Bioethics at Winthrop- University Hospital, believes is the essence of the practice of medicine. Dr. Berger has spearheaded the development of Winthrop Palliative Care — a stand-alone division in the Department of Medicine at Winthrop-University Hospital that is at the forefront of the palliative care movement. Palliative practitioners can have a positive e‚ect on both patients and those who care for them. Winthrop Palliative Care is poised to meet growing demand for these services for patients with life-limiting illnesses. As more children survive cancer, many face a new challenge later in life in the form of age-accelerating chronic conditions, according to recent research. The feature in our special clinical section about oncology reviews those findings. We also examine surprising results from a study about the complex relationship among statin use, cholesterol and colorectal cancer risk. This issue addresses finance and practice management topics as well, and our Local News and People in the News sections detail recent happenings in health care in our region. Your organization's advanced techniques and expe- rienced clinicians may make it the ideal partner for referring physicians.
